Svab's face, shot close-up, in a mimicry of laughter and tears.
The film was shot and screened in the Czech Cinematograph Pavilion during the Exhibition of Architecture and Engineering at the Prague Exhibition Grounds, which lasted from June to October 1898. – A letter from Josef Šváb-Malostranský to Jan Kříženecký and Josef Pokorný, dated 30th of April 1898, is stored at the National Technical Museum, in which Josef Šváb-Malostranský offers to "put together several comic scenes" for Czech Cinematograph. On the basis of this proposal came the film Smích a pláč (Laughter and Tears).
