Landowner Matula goes to sell his cattle at the annual market and says farewell to his wife and daughter. In the evening after a game of cards he books into a room above the pub. When he falls asleep the publican comes into his room and robs him. After the landowner returns home to his village, gendarmes force their way into his house and lead him away after having been informed by the publican. His wife dies from grief and his daughter Marie leaves her native village and, by chance, gets a job in the services of the publican. After some time, the publican realises that Marie is the landowner's daughter and he marries her. From then on, the wretched landowner appears before him in the form of a spectre. Before his death, the publican admits his false accusation. The innocent landowner is released from prison and he returns with his daughter to his farm.
