Estrella, a beggarwoman with a proud and passionate heart and someone who values her freedom, lives with her companions Hugo and Marcel in the mountains. When an unknown man - Harry - gives her two silver coins, they all follow him to his castle and decide to devise a cunning plan to rob him. Estrella pretends to faint and drops to the ground in front of Harry's castle. Harry picks her up and carries her inside. He showers her with gifts and persuades her to live a new life with him. Her companions, however, are not content with this arrangement and force her to poison Harry. Harry sees through their plan and has Hugo arrested. Estrella stays on at the castle. Hugo escapes from prison and tries to return to his rich parents from whom he had run away after a bitter disagreement. His parents, however, do not take him in and so Hugo looks up of Estrella who has married Harry while he was in prison. Harry challenges Hugo to a dual. Estrella realises how much she loves her husband and she tries to protect Harry with her own body, However, they both die. Hugo ends his life under the wheels of a train.
