A recording of the first act of the opera Faust and Margaret by Charles Gounod. Old Faust reflects on the futility of life and tries to poison himself. Mephistopheles appears and offers him the elixir of youth. Faust grows young again. At the close of the film Mr Hlavsa, (Mephistopheles) with his make-up removed, bows to the camera.
An attempt at a "sound" film. The screening was accompanied by the voice of Stanislav Hlavsa, an artist and a small-time opera singer who stood next to the screen and performed both the tenor part (Faust) and the bass part (Mephistopheles). The musical accompaniment was directed by the bandleader J. Tyl. In this form, the film was probably presented for the first time from November 28 to December 4, 1913 in the Minuta cinema in Vinohrady.
