It is harvest time and old Mr and Mrs Lomoz are working on the estate together with their daughter Mařka. Mařka longs for the city life and willingly accepts the offer of a relative to go and life with her. She makes the acquaintance of the elegant Dr Vorel who is more interested in the inheritance she will receive from her aunt than the girl herself. When another relative is cited as heir, Vorel leaves Mařka. The disillusioned girl returns home but she soon becomes involved in a dispute with her sister-in-law. Thus she accepts an offer of marriage from a local farmer, Kopal. Kopal soon realises that he won't get much in the way of help from his wife. One day, before a storm, Kopal has to quickly take in the wheat from the field and he is seriously injured when his waggon overturns. Mařka changes after this accident and tries to make amends to Kopal. Not even Voral, who has found out about her aunt's will, in which Mařka is to inherit a fair sum, cannot take her away from her husband. Mařka stands firmly by her husband's side and rejects Vorel.
