Jan Křišťan inherits Motyčín estate and arrives to have a look round his property. In his vineyards he catches a young attractive thief, Běla, the daughter of the landowner Krulich, and he falls in love with her. Běla, however, leaves for boarding school where, under the influence of her emancipated friends who think love is outdated, her love for Jan grows cold. Krulich decides to take drastic action. He takes Běla away from the boarding school and marries her off to Jan. However, Běla arrives accompanied by her friends. Jan, as a husband, is considered a lesser being, Běla doesn't want to hear of any obligations which dictate married life. The unhappy Jan decides to call for the help of his two friends from Prague. Finally, Běla's friends Vlasta and Máňa leave with Jan's friends for Prague and only then can Jan begin a proper married life with Běla.
