Poet and dreamer Jan Mařan does not like the busy life of the city so he goes to look for a flat in a romantic old part of Prague. He is contented with what he has found and he also meets a sweet girl and falls in love with her. His love, however, does not last long. One day he sees a portrait of a woman from the 18th century in an antique dealer's shop. He is bewitched by her beauty and her eyes which seem to follow him wherever he goes. By chance he wanders into an old garden and he suddenly sees the lady from the painting. He manages to enter her period, and tells her of his love for her but the lady runs off. The only thing he has left to remind him of her is the rose from her hand. Jan cannot forget the woman and he searches for her in vain. He is gradually unable to distinguish dream from reality and he falls seriously ill. When he is dying he sees his beautiful lady, who lures him to her.
