While a group of children are playing by the railroad station a tragic accident occurs during which Vašíček's legs are crushed by a train. After a complicated operation Vašíček is moved to Jedlička's Institute where, thanks to the teachers, wardens and the friendship of the other children, Vašíček gradually comes to terms with his handicap. He learns a trade and after a few years he leaves the Institute to learn to live a normal life once more. (According to an article appearing in the press at the time the film was made.)
