At the request of his dying mother, a young man enters a religious order but the pretty gardener's daighter at the monastery fills his head with confused ideas right from the first few weeks. Luckily the novice has time to reflect upon his decision. Father Řehoř, a sad monk, tells him his own story which had drove him to the monastery twenty five years before. This story forms the main part of the plot: young love - an arrenged marriage - entering the monastery - a murder intrigue - the death of an unhappy lover, now she is a widow - the serenity and solitude of the monastery. The love story of the young novice ends happily, however, thus father Řehoř symbolises the latter's fate by freeing a bird from the cage. (According to an article appearing in the press at the time the film was made).
