Bank director Karel Svansen, at the recommendation of his uncle, a doctor, decides to take a holiday out in the open air. In his club he bets with his friends that he will do manual work for a whole month. He starts a job as a lumberjack at a farm owned by the landowner Mosovský. He makes the acquaintance of Annie, his daughter, whom her father wishes to marry their wealthy neighbour Goron. Annie, however, keeps trying to postpone the wedding. Karel makes friends with Josef, another lumberjack and his son Jiřík. Annie loses a little medallion with a picture of her mother on it so Karel goes with Jiřík to look for it. While doing so, they come across a workshop where counterfeit money is being made. The head of the shop Goron fears that he will be found out so he decides to flood the workshop. Jiřík goes for help but Karel is captured by the counterfeiters and tied up in one of the rooms which is quickly filling up with water. Help comes at the last moment. Karel gives Annie the lost medallion and goes back to the city. He wins the bet in the club and finds Josef a job. Josef and Jiřík prepare to move to the city and Annie goes with them. They are surprised by the social standing of the former lumberjack. Annie finally gladly accepts Karel's offer of marriage.
