A story from the former Újezd barracks. Neruda's birthplace is located in the House of the Two Suns... Neruda is in his apartment reflecting on the troubles he had with his old straw mattress. The caretaker refuses to take the old mattress away, as does the rag and bone man. The next morning the maid wants to throw the mattress into the street, but a policeman thwarts her attempt. That evening, Neruda burns the mattress in the stove and someone alerts the fire brigade. Neruda traipses through the streets of Malá Strana making enquiries as to where he might dispose of the mattress. Over the next few days, small packages of straw wrapped in paper appear, unnoticed throughout the neighbourhood. The remaining straw is taken away by the dairy woman as litter for her pony. Finally, Neruda frolics with his maid on a new mattress.
