Raftsman Machon sends his son Jiri away to study. Jiri completes his university course and is awarded a doctorate. Raftsman Sykora is envious of old Machon for his son's success since his own son is a layabout and good-for-nothing. During an argument on a raft, Sykora pushes Machon into the river and the latter is wounded as his head strikes a rock. To save his father, Jiri sacrifices the skin on his head. Meanwhile Jiri's girl Helena is being seduced by her assistant and, in seclusion, she awaits the birth of her child. Jiri's father becomes mad from his grief over Helena's infidelity. Helena tries to drown herself but Jiri saves her life. Finally they are united in their great suffering. (According to the censors.)
