Tomáš the tramp is released from prison in the spring and he makes for his native village. There he meets the puppeteer Kopecký and his ward Anička. The village belongs to the estate of count Svarovský. Ferry, the nephew of the estate administrator Bender comes in his stead to visit the village and flirts with Eva, Svarovský's wife. Anička, who is being courted by Bender, has fallen in love with the footman Rudolf; the latter, however, is shot. Bender notices the little medallion Anička wears round her neck and sees that she is, in fact, the lost daughter of count Svarovský. The puppeteer confirms this fact just before he dies. The count, not knowing that Anička is his daughter, takes her into his home. The girl, however, wants to escape from this region. As she goes to visit the puppeteer's grave, she is followed by Bender who accidentally falls down a ravine. Anička, exhausted and tormented, also dies. When Tomáš comes to see the count who is distressed that his wife has run off with Ferry, he cannot bring himself to tell the latter of his daughter's death. Tomáš leaves the village and throws Anička's medallion into the lake.
