Czech mills are hidden in the midst of the Czech countryside among rivers and woods. Each year a journeyman wanders from mill to mill - the rascal Šebastián Šafránek - who is welcome wherever he goes. He is the witness and engineer of three love matches: Anička, the daughter of miller Karásek, and the poor but loving young Tonda Kolenatý; then Karásek's son Karel and the daughter of the lord of the castle Zasmucký, Julinka, who is to be betrothed against her will to the older baron Zlámaný; and finally the servant Josef and the chambermaid Růžena. Baron Zlámaný, exposed as a money forger, finally finds comfort in the arms of Julinka's aunt, the old maid Filoména who is set on marrying. Everyone embraces each other to the music of the local four-member choir; only Šafránek leaves on his own, but contented, to another stage, another mill.
