Doctor Milan Jesenský takes his bride Věra to the Krkonoše district where he is the local doctor. Věra persuades him, on their wedding night, not to go to visit the patient who lives alone. In the morning, however, the doctor discovers that that woman has died alone in the night during childbirth and he manages to save only the newborn baby. Milan wants to adopt the child but Věra refuses and their relationship becomes strained. Věra begins to visit Prague frequently to see her old mother. During one of these visits, she makes the acquaintance of baron Oskar Winterberg who charms her. A year passes and Věra's relationship with the baron continues. Milan accidently finds out about Věra's romance during one of his visits to Prague. He seeks out the baron, finds Věra naked in his house and, utterly defeated, he decides to give his wife her freedom. Věra soon finds out, however, that the baron has other lovers and she leaves him. It is Christmas Eve. The lonely Věra returns to the Krkonoše mountains and Milan forgives her as they stand together by the Christmas tree.
