The daughter of a tenant living on a duke's estate, Řina Sezimová, returns home from studying abroad. Řina soon makes the acquaintance of the young but ailing prince and they grow fond of each other. Soon afterwards, however, the prince dies. At the funeral Řina meets his friends - the artist Novara and baron Leopold of Tužebník. The baron courts the girl - mainly for the sizable account her family has in a savings bank where Leopold works as one of its directors. As a result of a noble deed during which he comes to the aid of a servant on Sezima's estate, he wins Řina's favour. The planned inspection of the savings bank in which the baron has embezzled large amounts of money to support his gambling passion, forces him to explain to Řina the urgency of his betrothal to her in order to get himself out of trouble. Řina, shattered by his confession, rejects him and the baron has to give himself away. Řina leaves temporarily for Prague and by chance meets the artist Novara. She falls in love with him, the artist asks for her hand in marriage and the two are wed.
