Dáňa Lorencová comes from a poor mountain village. Her brother Petr is a smuggler and his illegal activities bring disrepute and misfortune upon the whole family. When the police come looking for him, his mother takes the blame upon herself. Petr escapes, his mother is arrested and young Dáňa has to leave home. In the city, however, luck befalls her and she becomes a famous dancer. Everyday, Kalvoda, the coachman, stands in front of the theatre where Dáňa dances. One day, he gets news from his son Jiří. He hears that Jiří has been unable to establish a medical practice in the mountains and has returned home. Kalvoda secures him a position as a doctor in the theatre. There, Jiří meets once again with Dáňa, they recognise each other from the past in Dáňa's village and fall in love with each other. However, the ill-fated Petr meddles in their lives. He discovers that Dáňa lives in prosperity and starts to blackmail her. Jiří, who does not know who Petr is, becomes jealous and they quarrel openly. They are reconciled when Dáňa's mother meets Jiří by chance in the street, completely debilitated after her release from prison.
