Stall-holder Katynka befriends another stall-holder Nanynka and their children, Emil and Helenka, are to marry. Emil, however, loves the gentle Klara, and Lojzik the onion-grower, however, has eyes only for Helenka. Katynka argues with Nanynka since Emil does not want to marry Helenka. Emil leaves home, marries Klarka and moves with her to Brno. He gets a job in an office but is troubled by the fact that he has not finished his studies. Klara writes to her mother-in-law after a time to try and make amends. Katynka comes to see her son, apologises to Klara and invites the whole family to Prague, including the orphaned Floriska who has been taken in by Klara. In the autumn Emil takes his final exams. Katynka and Nanynka make up. Floriska finds a friend at the marketplace in Iskariot, also an orphan. When Katynka dies they take over her stall together.
