There is a lot of thievery going on at the hotel Atlantic, the guests are losing their money and jewels. The manager and his hotel board hire a private detective and set a reward of 10,000 marks for the capture of the thief. The new liftboy Fred, in love with the maid Annette, wants to earn the reward and sets off to find the culprit. He is soon successful, he finds out that a man and a woman registered as count and countess Berg are stealing from the hotel guests. The pair are preparing a big robbery at the masked ball. The count believes that Fred has discovered who they are and has him bound up and locked in the cellar. He then steals a valuable necklace and flees the hotel with the countess. Fred, however, has dexterously freed himself, he runs out of the cellar and makes after the thieves. He catches up with them on a train and arrests them. Fred's uncle, the criminal investigator who had moved into the hotel, catches another thief, the manager of the hotel himself. Fred, who is discovered to be his uncle's assistant, is given the reward and he asks for Annette's hand. (According to a description of the time.)
