Knife-grinder Rabas and his wife behave to their ward Eva as if she were a servant. They send her to work in a tobacco factory where all the other girls hate her for her diligence. Furthermore, Mrs. Rabas wants to give her to the fairy swings owner Tomy. In despair, Eva puts a plea for help into a box of cigars. This plea is read by two brothers from the estate of Vysoká - Anatol Roden and his brother Pavel. They decide to go to see the girl, Anatol is to play the role of her admirer and Pavel is his secretary. Eva has lost her job in the meantime and when she comes across Pavel by chance, she goes off with him to Vysoká. She falls in love with Pavel and her feelings are returned. Eva feels a certain obligation to Anatol but when she overhears a conversation between the two, she realises that they are brothers, that they deceived her and she decides to punish them. She continues to urge Anatol to marry her so that the brothers have to tell her the truth. Eva then forgives them and confesses her love for Pavel.
