Greta Weberová embezzles money and, as a result, loses her job. She is abandoned by her lover Robert Merk and she seeks refuge with her friend from her childhood days, Helena Dahlová. Helena's father, a builder, agrees to let Greta live with the family. Helena is betrothed to Petr Kafka but her father does not welcome the union since Kafka does not have permanent employment. Greta seduces Dahl and causes the breakdown of the family. Petr Kafka tries to help the family, he finds a job and, after the death of Helena's mother, marries Helena. Helena's father, who has moved into another flat with Greta, happens to meet Merk in a club and catches Greta giving Merk some money. A fight breaks out during which Merk is killed. Dahl is imprisoned and Greta becomes a prostitute. After years in prison, Dahl returns home and his daughter and son-in-law take him in to live with them.
