Juro and Jano, rivals in love, both are trying to win the favours of Maryša. Juro leaves to do seasonal work and when he returns he decides to marry Maryša. Jano also leaves, along with other villagers. They all live together in a stable and a number of them catch an eye infection – trachoma. Jano wants to be cured but Juro refuses medication and decides to go off to America. There he is held for a medical inspection and is sent back although he has to pay his own way. Meanwhile Jano, now recovered, has married Maryša. Juro becomes blind and lives as a beggar in his native village.
Note
The end of the film was made as an educational health-service film warning against dangers of trachoma. The second reel shows a motorised threshing machine by Wichterle & Kovařík at work.
