The writer Matěj Kuděj is having financial problems and he decides to leave town and go with his friend Jaroslav to the country. They set off without any particular destination in mind and, on the way, they come across a rich factory-owner and his daughter accompanied by her fiancé Ludvík. The factory-owner is immediately enchanted by the two writers' unusual sense of humour; Jaroslav, in turn, is captivated by the charm of his daughter. Before their return to town, he writes her a letter in which he tells her of his feelings. At the station Matěj and Jaroslav become acquainted with Mr Pitlík - a rich Czech-American - and his daughter Norma. He invites them both to his villa. There, Matěj and Jaroslav discover that Mr Pitlík is a life-long friend of the factory owner. During the night they are witness to a jewel theft and they identify the perpetrator - it is the fiance of the entrepreneur's daughter, Ludvík. They leave soon after this embarrassing incident but again meet up at a masked ball where Jaroslav intends asking for the hand in marriage of the factory owner's daughter. The film ends with a wedding and Matěj receives some money from Pitlík.
