Farmer Záhoř swears in court that he has returned old Podestat the money that he borrowed in the past. Podestat's son, however, knows that this isn't true. Záhoř works with Vondra and Matěj. Both wish to court the blacksmith's daughter Nana. The stronger Vondra finally agrees that Matěj should marry her. A lavish wedding is prepared. Nana finds out that Matěj is not a good farmer and she grows closer to Vondra. Everyone except Matěj knows this. Nana is expecting a baby, but she doesn't know who the father is. When a neighbour tells Matěj of Nana's infidelity, he nearly kills her. Vondra has taken completely his brother's place. Matěj wishes to leave for America. However, Vondra kills him during the night and is seen burying the body at dawn. Old Záhoř is desperate, he wants to return joung Podestat his money but the latter refuses it. The gendarmes take Vondra away. In his barn old Záhoř burns the banknotes he had once denied he had and the building goes up in flames.
