The wealthy baker and owner of several houses Barnabáš Bernášek wants to marry off his daughter Běla to playboy Mušoár. He is not interested in the fact that she loves the shy engineer Vláďa Skružný. Mušoár in reality is called Robert Řimbaba and he is particularly fond of spending the money of his aunt Serafína, owner of a fashion salon. He is greatly interested in the seamstress Márinka and cunningly lures her into his flat where he intends to seduce her. Márinka defends herself - her heart belongs to the baker's boy Jeník. She does not know that he is the son of Mr Bernášek and, incognito, is testing the strength of her love. Serafína wants to adopt Márinka. It seems that Márinka is the daughter she bore when she was still unmarried and who was brought up by Mrs Havlová. Mušoár, who has his eyes on the inheritance, tells the cobbler Isidor Kulich that he is Márinka's father. In the end everything is explained and the young couples - Márinka and Jeník and Běla and Vláďa - find a happy end to their story.
