The Right to Sin

Synopsis

At a seaside spa on the Adriatic, naval officer Otto Král tries to seduce Věra Machová, the wife of a Prague doctor. Věra does not take his attempts at courting seriously. Her husband Rudolf, who has stayed in Prague, believes that, in his wife's absence, he has a right to sin and he tastes the forbidden fruit with his lover Jája. When Věra comes home unexpectedly, she finds a garter belt in the bedroom which does not belong to her. Her husband claims he does not know how it got there. On the advice of her mother, Věra does not reproach her husband; she listens patiently to him expounding on the problems of fidelity and the right to sin. Rudolf changes his views, however, when Otto Král comes to Prague on holiday and continues to take an interest in Věra. He comes to realise that he had behaved badly; he throws out the naval officer and tries to improve his relationship with his wife. When he sees Jája while out for a ride around Prague with his wife, his indifference is plain. Věra accepts this with a smile, she knows her husband pretty well.
