Synopsis

The shy Associate Professor Johánek is expecting to receive his inheritance from his uncle. His friend Plevka represents him in his legal affairs concerning the will. Růžena, the daughter of Dynybylová the caretaker, is fond of Johánek and the affection is returned. Johánek gets drunk with his friends and the next day cannot remember what has happened. He is also missing one shoe. Dynybylová tries to use his loss of memory to help her daughter. She incites to say to Johánek that he seduced her. Lojza accuses Johánek of setting fire to the haystack and demands money to keep quiet. The idea of a spell in prison, however, does not seem all that bad to Johánek. He welcomes it as an opportunity to write his thesis in peace. At Johánek's request, Lojza, a friend of his, Růžena, Dynybylová and the police commissioner all meet up at his house. The commissioner is well aware that Lojza and his crowd are a bad lot and he intends taking them off to the commissariate straight away. Plevka is not too happy about the accusation brought against Johánek by Růžena. Everything is explained with the arrival of Divíšek who has brought Johánek's shoe. Johánek had left it at his house on the night in question. When it is discovered that Johánek has not inherited any money but a collection of fossils instead, Dynybylová cannot get over her disappointment. This, however, does not prevent Růžena and Johánek from getting to know each other better.
