Synopsis

For Josef Rezek, no deal is dirty, so long as it brings him some money. His wife, in an attempt to keep his love, neglects her daughter Babula. Rezek gives a dinner for his influential friends and also invites his female friend Willi who, as his insurance agent, arranges a policy for Babula. The girl is playing with her friend Honza, the son of the daily help Kolbenová, when the dinner is interrupted by distrainers. Willi causes a scandal and the distraught Mrs Rezková sees her husband in his true light. Enraged, Rezek throws Honza out of the house saying that his mother will never be allowed back in the house to work for them. Honza tries to help his mother by taking Babula out to earn money on the streets: the boy plays the accordion and the girl sings. Both are successful. However, they are caught by a policeman who takes Babula back to her parents and sends Honza to a children's home. Mrs Rezková, unhappy at the turn of events, tries to take her own life and, consequently, Babula also finds herself in the children's home. The children are better off in the home, known as "On the Sunny Side", but Babula becomes homesick. They decide at least to visit their parents but Mrs Rezková sends them back herself convinced that they will be better looked after in the home.
