Doctor Bernhard is so consumed by his work that he rather neglects his wife Helena and their daughter. Helena, who was an actress before marriage, suffers from the constant solitude. It is therefore no great surprise that she succumbs to the courtship of Bernhard's cousin Julian. Their relationship has no prospects, however, because Helena does not want to leave her daughter on any account. Julian solves the situation by going off with Lilo, a dancer. But after a short while he falls seriously ill and only a risky operation can save him. Only Bernhard is capable of carrying out this operation. The difficult operation is successful and Julian will live. While awaiting the results, Helena fully realises her husband's rare qualities. In future, their marriage and their daughter will be of greatest importance to her, and Bernhard will also find more time for the family.
