Although heavily in debt, count Bolko Baranský leads a carefree life on his estate while distrainers have taken all his furniture and animals. Bolko and his potty but wealthy friend Popiel go to the races. There Popiel's eye is charmed by Wanda Kwasinská who is accompanied by her mother Jadwiga. Baranský wins a bet and the landowner Zaremba tries to engineer a meeting between him and his daughter Helena but Baranský declines. Hurt by this behaviour, Helena decides to pay him back. The following summer Bolko goes off to see Wanda perform in a ballet in Warsaw and Helena applies for a job on his estate incognito as a housekeeper and prepares a ceremonial homecoming for Bolko. Within a short while the two of them have become friends. Into this emerging idyll come Wanda and her mother. Bolko offends Helena in front of them and she runs off home. Wanda's mother is horrified by his apparent poverty and tries to persuade her daughter to choose Popiel instead. Zaremba finally manages to introduce his daughter Helena to Bolko at a harvest festival. Bolko is surprised to discover that Helena is his former housekeeper and he realises that he now loves her.
