A convict escapes from prison and all attempts to recapture come to nothing. A poacher appears in a nearby forest and woodsman Karel tries to catch him, without success. Mary, the daughter of the hunting ground owner, is secretly in love with Karel. But she is a generous-spirited woman and when she finds out that Karel loves Liduška - whose aunt he lives with - and that Liduška requites his feelings, she abandons her love. Karel asks Liduška to marry him but she inexplicably says no. The girl is accidentally injured by a poacher's gunshot. The poacher takes her to his hut. Karel happens to overhear their quarrelling and realises Liduška is the poacher's wife. They had recently married but straight after the ceremony the man had been arrested for his crimes; he escaped from prison and now lived as a poacher. Karel does not tell Liduška he knows her secret, but he gets the police to surround the forest and the poacher chooses to kill himself. Karel's love helps Liduška get over her suffering and they both can look forward to a new life together.
The film was shot in both Czech and German versions with the same film crew and the same actors.
