Synopsis

Young Madla and her godmother meet emperor Joseph II in a field, he shows them a telescope and gives Madla a thaler as a souvenir. Many years later, Madla as a grandmother tells Princess of Sagan about her meeting with the emperor and about her husband Jiří. Grandma's grandchildren Barunka, Jan, Vilém and Adélka also visit the Princess and the Comtesse Hortensie. Field hunters from Hradec stay in Žernov before leaving for the Italian battlefield. Three of them stay with farmer Mikeš. One of them, a strange black hunter with mesmerizing eyes, starts following Mikeš' daughter Viktorka. Even in the church, Viktorka can't get away from his deep, hypnotic eyes. She is unhappy and accepts a scapular from a smith to protect her from the man. At a harvest festival, when the whole neighbourhood, including the grandmother and her children, gathers, Viktorka gives the priestess an ornamented wreath. The hunter follows her even to this harvest festival. The distraught girl agrees to marry the young man called Toník. At Mikeš' request, the governor moves the black huntsman to another building. One night the soldier manages to declare his love for Viktorka by the river. Later, a hunter from Rýznburg, returning from his grandmother's house in Staré bělidlo, finds her there and takes her home. Three days later the soldiers leave the village. Viktorka, who is not doing well, learns this from her sister Mařenka. The soldier runs away at night to join his group. For three months he travels with the army, but at the border he must stay in the nearest village. After a week, the black hunter is killed in a fight with rebels. The half-mad Viktorka returns home with her new-born child. The Proškov children are swimming in the river, their grandmother keeps a close eye on them. Viktorka throws her child into the river at the raft. The Rýznburg hunter finds her in a cave. He and Viktorka's father Mikeš try in vain to catch her. At night, Viktorka sings a lullaby by the raft. The singing reaches Staré bělidlo, where even her grandmother can hear it. The next time they meet, Viktorka does not even recognise her father. Comtesse Hortensie visits the grandmother and tells her about her meeting with Viktorka. After months of struggling, Mařenka manages to bring her sister to the farmhouse to her dying father. After his death, however, the unfortunate girl again escapes into the woods. Princess of Sagan organises a hunt, in which also Comtesse Hortensie takes part. During a storm, poor Viktorka is killed by the lightning. Her body is found by the hunters and the Comtesse. The grandmother, her children and Princess of Sagan say goodbye to the dead girl. (Based on the original script)

Note

The project was being announced in the press from November 1932 to February 1933 and again from February 1935. The film was originally intended as a “luminous poem” with music by Dalibor C. Vačkář. Although filming was to take place in July and August 1935, only the exteriors were eventually shot in September 1935. The film never made it to the studio due to the difficult financial situation of the production company. It remained unfinished and is now lost. Even in November and December 1936, and in June and July 1937, the press still announced that the film would be completed and released in the studios under Annafilm's production based on Anna Švecová's rewritten script. Jan Svoboda later denied Annafilm's participation. The film was also briefly supervised by the banker Zdeněk Horáček. The role of Princess Katharina Wilhelmine of Sagan was initially intended for actress Růžena Nasková.
