In her Swiss boarding house Věra Nedbalová is missing her home and therefore decides to go back to Prague to visit her parents. She meets the student Jaroslav Landa in the train and agrees to see him again. Věra arrives home at a bad moment. Her father, an overworked lawyer, believes the idle gossip about his wife's infidelity and during a bitter quarrel he orders her out of the house. The shock causes Věra to have a nervous breakdown. There are also problems in Jaroslav's household. His sister Eva is the lover of professional seducer Petr Gabriel and she is now pregnant. Jaroslav visits Gabriel and the man's coarse behaviour provokes him to deliver him a good punch. The wounded Gabriel immediately files charges against him and lies in court that Jaroslav had demanded money from him. Věra asks her father to take up the defence. At the time of the quarrel Gabriel's new lover Vlasta happened to be in the flat and her testimony confirms Jaroslav's innocence. Councillor Lažanský, a friend of the Nedbals, persuades Nedbal to make it up with his wife. Eva later finds support in the artist Michal who had secretly loved her for a long time.
