Banker Hron has fallen in love with Eva Halerová and decides to help her father, the owner of a glassworks, out of some financial difficulties. Eva likewise loves Hron. However she marries him only under the pressure of her parents, because she is conscious of her long-ago wrong. During the time she was single a daughter was born to her and Eva visits her in secret and financially supports the family who is raising the child. The father of the girl, gambler and alcoholic Robert Turek, blackmails the elder Haler for money. He is even determined to break up Eva's happy marriage when he divulges to Hron the truth about his wife's illegitimate child. Hron is at first taken aback by the information, but because his marriage is childless and he would like a child, he decides to adopt the little girl. Yet he does not inform Eva of his intentions. The little girl misses her mother and therefore sets off alone for Prague. But her mother sends her away with the foster-mother so as to guard her secret from her husband. Soon Hron enters holding the child in his arms and he forgives his wife.
