The engineer Jan Svoboda has finally found a job with the factory owner Kolár. He is sent to America for a year and leaves his fiancée Eva behind at home. When he has gone she discovers she is pregnant. She loses her job and is in financial difficulties. Jan's brother, Pavel the priest, takes Eva and her baby to live with him in the countryside. Jan is sorely tempted. Kolár's daughter Mary has fallen for him and witholds Eva's letters in the belief that Jan will forget about Eva. Eva is courted by Vilém, an innkeeper's son. Pavel decides to write to Jan. Only thus does Jan find out he is a father and he decides to return straight away. Mary is distressed to see what she has caused and begs Jan to forgive her. Meanwhile Vilém, who did not get his way with Eva even by using force, spreads gossip in the village that Pavel is the father of Eva's child. The villagers demand that she leaves. Pavel prevents the despairing Eva from committing suicide. Everything is explained upon Jan's sudden return. Nothing now stands in the way of Eva and Jan's marriage.
