A group of young people return to Prague from Slapy. Only the painter Michal wants to stay on at the log-cabin to work. A young woman he does not know takes refuge there. It is Eva, the daughter of the head of an eye clinic Dr Hostovský who that morning had married her against her will to his assistant Dr Moravec; she had run away. Michal lets her rest at the cabin. Eva returns to her father but rows with him and leaves home for good. She falls in with a band of young artists and students. She becomes close to the careless student Jožka, aware however that it is not true love. After a while Michal, who lives with Jožka, decides to go back to Prague. Jiřina, a girl in the party, tries to shoot Jožka out of jealousy but accidentally wounds Michal gravely. She then kills herself. Michal recovers but begins to lose his sight. Eva, who loves him, selflessly looks after him. Moravec offers to restore Michal's sight by an operation but demands Eva return to him. Eva's father, however, realises his responsibility for the situation. He operates on Michal himself and does not stand in the way of their relationship.
