The third year at a Business School have a very strict teacher, Mr Vlk. He insists that in exams the pupils should recite by rote from the school book - which he is the author of. When one pupil, Eva Vichrová, has the impertinence to convey her father's opinion that there is little use in this method of instruction, the teacher flies into a rage. He invites her father, the businessman Mr Vichr, to the school for a talk. After a heated discussion the teacher decides to send three of his pupils to Mr Vichr's business to gain practical experience over the summer. Karel, Václav and Ivo are sure they will stun the other employees with their abilities, but they fail to do so. They can quote reams and reams of theory but flounder disasterously on even the smallest practical assignments. When the holidays are over they confirm Mr Vichr's view, which makes the teacher start issuing his threats again. The pupils openly rebel against the teacher. Karel, the initiator of the rebellion, is threatened with expulsion. When one day he does not come to school, the pupils fear he may do some mischief to himself. Mr Vlk is shaken and resolves to change the way he behaves and teaches. He happens to meet Karel on the street one night and assures him he is not at risk of being expelled.
