Examples Work Wonders

Jiřina, a law student, is travelling to her grandmother's for the holidays. She is given a lift by her friends Vašek and Karel in their car since they have a cottage not far from grandmother's villa. A second granddaughter lives at granny Bártlová's house, the fifteen-year-old Jarmila who has to suffer the conservative views of the old lady and her strict upbringing. Family friend and doctor Kosina is a frequent visitor to the villa, coming to treat the imaginary ailments which the grandmother dreams up. Grandmother does not agree with the lifestyle of the modern young men but she changes her negative attitude towards Vašek and Karel when the latter, a medical student, saves the life of the gardener's son when he is involved in an accident. Grandmother starts going on walks in the countryside and eventually gives up her pills. Along with her views, she also changes the way she dresses. Finally she asks Vašek, a student of architecture, to renovate her house so it can be filled with more sunlight. She is unable, however, to grasp the art of driving a car and realises that she had been behaving foolishly. She therefore entertains modern views but adopts a way of life more in keeping with her age.
