Stationer Cyril Putička diligently works his small shop. Alone he has successfully raised two sons, today civil engineers, and a daughter, Konstantina. His children persuade him to go to Prague, where he will be able to enjoy a much deserved retirement in a modernly furnished apartment. Because Konstantina would like to marry the son of a banker, her father eventually agrees. But the children already have their own lives and the active Putička is extremely bored. Therefore he finds a position as an assistant in a stationary shop belonging to the young widow Jarmila Valentová. Through his know-how he helps improve her business. His sons, who have in vain impeded him from an "undignified" profession, part with him on bitter terms. After a while Putička and Jarmila get married and set up several branch companies. After five years Putička's children, who in the meantime have foundered in business and marriage, come to him in contrition. Their father and Jarmila accept them kindly and they look after their new future.
