Šťovíček, an official, agrees to allow a film crew to film one day in his life. Taking him as an example, the film shows how wasteful we can be without realising it. We can get dressed in the morning in the dusky light, since switching on a lightbulb would waste electricity. We also waste a lot of water when washing. Mr Šťovíček also adds wood to the stove, even though the temperature in the room is 20 degrees. He throws the paper wrapping from his sandwiches in the bin when it could be used as scrap paper. Too many matches are used to light one cigarette. Mr Šťovíček gets ready for a meeting and, in addition to his lamp, he also turns on the overhead light while he is shaving. He puts on a clean shirt even though washing his last one will necessitate the use of water and electricity.
