Synopsis

The first day of the Five-Year-Plan has begun. A factory public address system calls the workers to the shop floor in one of the largest plants in Prague. The most important issue is the chief topic of the day – the fulfilment of the Plan. The young people are full of self-confidence, the older staff members are more sceptical. The son of the old grinder Karhan, Jarka, announces the first proposal for improvement - the milling cutter should be supplied with an automatic off-switch. Jarka also gathers together a work-team with his friends which is to help improve the antiquated lathe room. Incited by the young workers, the older members also provide their help. A new machine is introduced to aid the workers – the "Centreless" – however, it is damaged by the careless Lojza and the Plan is threatened. At this point, old Karhan proposes to try and increase efficiency and challenges the young staff to a competition. They accept with enthusiasm. The competition is won by the team of old Karhan whose thirty-year experience and know-how work wonders. In the end, the competition ends with a reconciliation between young and old, since everyone has the same goal – to fulfil their obligations to the 9th Czechoslovak Communist Party Congress.
