Two young men - mason Franta and worker Béla - meet two girls - Mařka and Vlasta, on a picnic. The young men don't suspect that these are two trainees from the nearby masonry boarding-school for girls. They are all very surprised when they meet after a while on a building site where the girls begin working as trained masons. Franta really likes the beautiful and hard-working Mařka and their relationship slowly grows into love. It happens that Mařka works in the group of Franta's father, mason Doubrava. He doesn't like the innovations which the girl would like to introduce in their work. Still, Doubrava is a reasonable man. He manages to improve the work of an excellent but very lazy mason, Bureš. He also handles well his daughter Žofka's decision to train at the boarding-school to become a mason. When he sees how building "in threesomes" helped them finish the work on the thirteenth group of houses that was getting behind schedule, old Doubrava grows pleased with the innovations. The old and the young start working together with joy, looking forward to their future.
