Synopsis

The etude is an adaptation of a section of a novel in which the Soviet pedagogue describes the establishment of camps for deprived youth in the period between the two World Wars. The illiterate wards of these institutions, often with a criminal past, learn to read and write here and can even train in a handicraft. Věra, Kuzma and Matvey have fully adapted and give the hostile and lazy ward Perec a talking-to. Matvey would like to learn how to make shoes from him. He would like to present one pair to the camp's patron, the writer Maxim Gorky.
