Young Tom has been unemployed for six years. So he travels right across the United States to ask his brother-in-law Jesse Smith for a job. Smith has his own worries - another driver has died transferring nitroglycerine. Tom asks if he can do this risky but well-paid job. Smith turns him down. When Tom tells him about his beloved sister, Tom's wife, growing old in poverty, he gives him the work. He looks on sadly as Tom leaves, in the latter's words, the happiest man in the world.
