A large crate is brought to councillor Bubka's flat. It is a gift from professor Široký from Prague who lived for a time with his family. The crate contains a beautiful glass bookcase. The Bubkas, however, have nothing to put in it. Mrs Bubková therefore tells her husband to get some Prague booksellers to send some books "on approval". After professor Široký's intended visit they can take them back. A consignment of valuable books arrives shortly after. The councillor asks the typist Merunka to arrange the books in the bookcase. In his diligence he writes Bubka's name in all of them. If that weren't enough, news comes that professor Široký is unable to visit after all.
