The year is 1409. The maiden Eliška is marrying the castle's owner, ageing knight Jakub Vlk of Sedlo, to whom she had been promised at birth. While the groom merrily celebrates with the guests, the bride sadly sits in the kitchen. Her beloved - page Petr - comes to meet her there. Petr persuades Eliška to escape with him. He doesn't suspect that their conversation is overheard by the old housekeeper, who warns her master about their plans. Petr is caught and bound in chains. As proof of her fidelity to her bridegroom, Eliška must burn a mark on Petr's forehead. Instead, the girl embraces Petr. For punishment, the lovers are enclosed in a wall. Before they die, they sing a song of love. Five centuries pass: On the wall behind which Eliška and Petr died is a fresco depicting two embracing lovers. The story has it that they shall be freed when another loving couple hears their song, always sung at midnight, from beginning to end. The castle now belongs to an industrialist and his romantically minded daughter Eliška has brought a young inventor, Petr, to the wall; he is hoping to win her father's support. The rich industrialist doesn't agree with his daughter's choice and when he surprises the couple at the wall, Petr cowardly puts his ambition before his love. The events move into the twentieth century. The fresco is being restored by two student artists - Eliška and Petr. The young man is bored with the work and decides to leave both the castle and Eliška. In a quarrel that occures, he breaks Eliška's record with the ancient love song on it. The old professor, the students' leader, enters the room. He speaks wisely about the most important things in life, which demand patience and sacrifice. Love is one of those things. Petr is ashamed of his selfishness and makes up with Eliška right away.
