A young couple is having a good time at the fair. But the girl Alena becomes very gloomy when her Štěpán starts throwing ringlets onto bottles with alcohol in them and finally wins one. The thing is that the crane-operator Štěpán Horych has big problems with alcohol. The young man gets drunk the same day and ends up in the emergency ward. The doctor and the nurses routinely help those who disturb the public peace with drunkenness. Those who decide to get rid of their addiction, and are in therapy, help out at the station. Alena breaks up with Štěpán. Drunk, Štěpán almost causes a tragedy at work and is demoted to a lower position. On his way home, he stops at the tap-room. There he meets the drifter whom he already saw at the emergency ward. Štěpán decides to take an anti-alcoholic treatment. After he leaves the hospital, he returns to the building. He knows that if he succeeds in not drinking he will be able to work on the crane again. Alena, who came back to him, will surely be by his side.
