There is an axe driven into the Cvrkov church tower. The legend has it that it saved the life of a carpenter who held on to it when he fell from the tower. In neighbouring Dobrovice, though, they have another version. The axe is, they say, a symbol of Cvrkov's continual debt. There must be some truth to it. The Cvrkov farming cooperation is not prospering, people are discontented, and the landowner Outrata, who isn't a cooperative member, gladly makes fun of his fellow-farmers. The Dobrovice farmers are doing well so they decide to take the neighbours under their patronage. They invite them over and warn them about what needs improving in the organization of their work and finances. Cvrkov farmers accept their advice and their cooperation starts achieving better results. Then they all meet at a village dance to celebrate their success.
