Unek, the concentration camp prisoner, attempts stealing a piece of bread from his sleeping fellow prisoner. Tonda, however, wakes up and Unek admits his hunger and despair as well as his intention to commit a suicide. Tonda explains that the end of war is close: he has noticed that the number of cigarette butts which he secretly collects from the guards, has lowered dramatically. The Nazi supplies are obviously running out. Unek calms down and shares a cigarette rolled of butts with Tonda. Tonda also gives him a piece of his bread.
