A father forces his daugher Milena to marry one of her three suitors. Milena, however, loves the fourth man, Vítek. She meets him in secret and they together attend a puppet-theatre performance. The story of princess Militka and her unwanted suitors inspires the lovers to find a solution. Milena persuades one of her suitors, Milínský, to disguise himself as a monk and spend a night in a crypt to prove his love. Her second suitor, Strachota, is supposed to spend a night in a knight's armour, guarding a dead monk. The third suitor, Mr Bukovec, is supposed to come to the crypt disguised as a monk at midnight. The three bridegrooms scare each other in the crypt, fight with each other and discredit themselves. After all this, the father does not any more prevent Milena from marrying her beloved Vítek.
